Napa Uptown Theater FINALLY Opens

I was reading the local paper this past Sunday (Napa Valley Register) and came across some local news for Napa, California that I am actually thrilled to share with my fellow Whargarblers…George Altamura who is the owner of the historic 1937 Uptown Theater in Napa, California will finally open on May 14th, 2010 as a venue for LIVE musical performances. Locals have been listening for a decade on how the Uptown Theater will be renovated and will be ready to open soon but after many delays, this time it’s really official and ready to open. The original plan was to turn the old theater into a movie house. Eventually the plan was changed and the final decision was to turn the theater into a performance center. I personally am glad for this change and believe it’s the right way to go. When the doors open May 14th, there will a list of famous performers coming to play at the Uptown Theater and here’s who is currently lined up:
-May 14: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
        -May 22: Shawn Colvin
-May 29: Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainright III
-June 6: The Robert Cray Band
        -June 12 & 13: Merle Haggard
        -June 17: Jonny Lang
        -July 16: Keb’ Mo’
        -August 5: Los Lonely Boys
*Tickets go on sale on March 16th on Ticketmaster.com
And keep eye out for other performing artists

After reading the article, I was able to go back and check out the pictures that were taken inside of the Uptown Theater and I think anyone who is fortunate enough to attend a show or just to walk inside will be impressed. Here’s what George Altamura had to say about the Uptown Theater “we’re spending whatever it takes to make this a magnificent theater. You can see that nothing is chintzy. We’re doing something that will be a work of art.” From what I can tell, I believe him.
The Uptown Theater is expected to have 850 seats available and have its doors open in the middle of May. It will be managed by Sheila Groves who has booked talent for Mystic Theatre in Petaluma in previous years. I for one am looking forward to grand opening of the Uptown Theater and can’t wait.
